FAQ

What direction should my air filter face?

Your air filter should face the direction of the airflow in your HVAC system. Look for an arrow on the side of the filter—this indicates the direction the air should flow through the filter. Typically, this means the arrow points toward the blower or fan in the system, ensuring the filter captures debris before the air enters your system.

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) ratings measure a filter’s ability to trap particles:

  • MERV 8: Captures larger particles such as pollen, dust mites, and mold spores. It provides good basic filtration for homes with standard air quality needs.
  • MERV 11: Traps smaller particles like pet dander, fine dust, and smoke. This is ideal for homes with pets or allergies.
  • MERV 13: Offers the highest level of filtration for residential use, capturing even finer particles, including bacteria, viruses, and smoke. It’s a great choice for homes in areas with heavy pollution or smoke from wildfires, or for people with severe allergies or respiratory issues. Be sure to ask your HVAC technician if your system can handle the restriction of MERV 13 filters in your home before installing.

Air filters typically last between 30 to 90 days (For 1” and 2” Depths) and between 120 to 180 days (For 4”+ Depths), depending on factors such as:

  • The air quality in your home (homes with pets, smokers, or high pollution may need more frequent changes).
  • HVAC system usage (filters in homes with heavy system use will need to be replaced sooner).

Check your filter regularly to ensure it’s not clogged or dirty.

Yes, we offer filters specifically designed to help with smoke and odors. Look for filters with activated carbon or a MERV rating of 11 or higher. These filters are effective at trapping smoke particles and neutralizing odors, making them a great choice for homes affected by wildfire smoke, cooking smells, or pet odors.

No, doubling up your air filters can restrict the air flow too much and can trigger the shut-off switch on your unit. Only one filter is needed per system.

No, a filter with more thickness is actually better for your unit as it is less restrictive due to the amount of media inside of it. If you were to take the media out and flatten it out there is more in a 4” filter compared to a 1” filter (utilizing the same size as an example)
